School Poultry Competitions

The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW invites all schools with facilities for keeping poultry to take part in our School Poultry Competitions at the 2023 Sydney Royal Easter Show.

In 2023, we ask for all Schools to submit their entries for all School Competition via the Online Entry System, there will be no offline form.

The aim of the Competitions is to provide all schools with the opportunity to participate in agriculture and rear poultry with their students.

The Competitions are FREE to enter.

School Egg Laying Competition

There are two School Egg Laying Competitions that cater for both Commerical Layers and School Exhibition Hens. Pullets will be dispatched end of November 2022 to those schools who have entered. Please refer to your email for information about your collection point. Class CEL01: Sydney Royal School (Commercial) Egg Laying Competition supported by Australian Eggs. Schools competing in Class CEL01 Sydney Royal School (Commercial) Egg Laying Competition recieve 6 pullets mid term 4. Schools are then required to rear the pullets and prepare their best three pullets to compete at the 2023 Sydney Royal Easter Show. The Competition is judged by poultry industry experts and consists of three components: Presentation of Exhibits: Three pullets are chosen by the school for judging. Birds are chosen based on exhibition qualities, uniformity and fitness for showing. Project Component: students are asked to create a Powerpoint presentation detailing how the pullets were raised and prepared for the Show. To be submitted online. Egg Laying Component: the quality of the eggs are laid by the three pullets (during the 10 days of Competition) are judged to commercial standards. Class PEL01: Sydney Royal School Purebred Egg Layers Competition Schools competing in Class PEL01 Sydney Royal School Purebred Egg Layers Competition are welcome to compete with their own purebred hens or can receive assistance by the RAS to source purebred hens. Schools are then required to prepare their best three pullets to compete at the 2023 Sydney Royal Easter Show. The Competition is judged by poultry industry experts and consists of three components: Presentation of Exhibits: Three pullets are chosen by the school for judging. Birds are chosen based on exhibition qualities, uniformity and fitness for showing. Project Component: students are asked to create a Powerpoint presentation detailing how the pullets were raised and prepared for the Show. To be submitted online. School Meat Bird Pairs Competition

The Sydney Royal School Meat Bird Pairs Competition will run as a trial at your school before the Sydney Royal Easter Show and culminate at the Show by exhibiting your birds. Meat Chicks will be dispatched Mid - February 2023 to those schools who have entered. Please refer to your email for information about your collection point. Competing Schools will receive a batch of day old chicks that will be dispatched to a school collection centre. Schools are then required to rear the chicks and prepare the best two females and two males to compete at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The Competition is judged by experts of the commercial poultry meat industry and consists of three components: Presentation of Exhibits: Live Competition of Meat Bird Pairs - best male pair and best female pair to be exhibited per school Carcase Component: Meat Bird Pairs birds are processed (organised by the Sydney Royal Easter Show) and carcases are judged to commercial standards Project Component - students are asked to create a Powerpoint presentation detailing how the meat birds were raised and prepared for the Show. Young Judges

The RAS Young Judges competitions are an opportunity for 15-25 year olds to try their hand in judging a variety of different exhibits such as Alpacas, Goats, Horses, Pigs, Poultry and Horticulture.

School Competitions

The Sydney Royal Easter Show is the largest classroom in New South Wales, it is the place to come to discover how to milk a cow or shear a sheep, how to grow the biggest pumpkins in Australia and even how to use horsepower for electricity. It is also the place students can come and show what they have learned and to be judged for the hard work in agricultural pursuits. In 1875 the first competitions for school students were held – in the areas of needlework, wood carving, natural history collections and drawing. By 1904 school competitions had expanded to include the first display of farm produce by school children – a precursor to the Schools District Exhibit Competition, and in 1935 junior judging of cattle was introduced. The tradition of exhibiting and judging for schools continues today and includes poultry, pig, goat, honey and scarecrows. Entry is free for all schools – city, metropolitan rural and regional.
